LGBTQ+ Pride Resources for Teachers: Activities & Powerpoint Downloads
What does LGBTQ+ stand for?
LGBTQ+ stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, plus all of the other identities within the community. The community is celebrated all year round with LGBT+ History Month, Transgender Day of Visibility, Pride Month and more.
What is LGBTQ+ Pride?
LGBTQ+ Pride Month is marked annually in June, to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community. Pride Month began to commemorate the Stonewall riots, a series of protests for LGBTQ+ liberation, beginning on 28th June, 1969.
Many schools across the globe use Pride Month as an opportunity to educate young people on the history of the LGBTQ+ community and to celebrate all those within their school who identify as LGBTQ+.
Why Celebrate Pride in Your School?
Celebrating Pride in your school will contribute to a welcoming and accepting environment. Teaching young people about the diversity of the world and to be respectful of everyone is a vital tool they will take into adulthood.
While huge progress has been made, LGBTQ+ young people continue to face challenges, LGBTQ+phobia, and are suffering needlessly. Educating young people about the LGBTQ+ community normalises it and significantly reduces the reports of LGBTQ+phobia.
All young people, including LGBTQ+ young people deserve to feel safe and supported at school.
Young people spend most of their childhood being at school, so knowing you come to a safe place for most of the day is important. Student, Parrenthorn High School
Downloadable Resource Pack for Teachers
The Proud Trust understands that teachers like you want to celebrate LGBTQ+ Pride Month, but with an ever growing workload, you don’t always have time to create LGBTQ+ teaching resources.
The Proud Trust has created a downloadable Pride Pack for schools, to equip you in being fully LGBTQ+ inclusive in your practice and curriculum. The LGBTQ+ resource includes weekly pre-planned lessons for assemblies and tutor time; engaging activities to help young people create their own Pride event and tips on how to make your school environment more inclusive.
To step up your school Pride celebrations, also included in your download package is a fundraising pack. It would be wonderful to use this opportunity to help support our Time To Be Proud campaign!
LGBT+ Pride Month is a key event in the LGBT+ calendar and a perfect opportunity for schools to increase visibility of and celebrate LGBT+ identities. This pack provides a step-by-step guide to creating a fun and engaging young person-led Pride Month.
It includes:
- Our ‘Planning a Successful LGBT+ Pride Month in Secondary Schools’ guide, with a week by week plan for the whole of Pride Month, a wealth of suggested engaging activities for your young people to help them plan their very own Pride event, and tips and ideas for teachers on how to make their practice more inclusive and Pride Month one for young people to remember.
- Four Assembly/Tutor Time PowerPoints (one for each week of Pride Month) which tackle different themes around LGBT+ inclusion.
Pay What You Can
We recognise that not all schools have the same budget available for resources, so this LGBT+ Pride download pack is priced on a pay-what-you-can scale. The suggested cost is £40, but 50% and 100% discounts are available which you can apply at checkout. All money raised from the sales of this pack will fund the work of The Proud Trust. LGBTQ+ Pride Month Fundraiser for The Proud Trust
Each and every hour of The Proud Trust’s work has the power to transform the lives of the LGBTQ+ young people who need it, but the charity can’t do this alone. That’s why we would love for you to use your school Pride event to fundraise for our TIME TO BE PROUD campaign, aiming to raise the funds for 1,500 hours of support for young people this Pride season.
The Proud Trust’s support includes LGBTQ+ resources, like the Pride Pack. To keep being able to create vital school resources, the charity needs your support. You are encouraged to get creative with your fundraising, for example, challenging yourself to see how many muffins you can bake in an hour and then selling them in a school bake sale!
