Primary School Workshops

Increasingly popular, we are delivering more and more LGBT+ awareness workshops in primary schools. Facilitated by experienced youth workers, many of whom have “lived experience”, we will carefully and skilfully navigate the topic in an age-appropriate way, through fun and engaging workshops.

Over the years, we have learned that for primary schools, breaking the “LGBT” topic down into component parts of sexual orientation, (the LGB bit), and gender identity, (the T bit), is much more effective for good learning and understanding. As such, we offer two types of workshops for students in key stage two in primary schools (and recommend that students experience both):

SAME-GENDER RELATIONSHIPS AND EQUAL MARRIAGE (the LGB bit of LGBT+)

During this workshop, we would look to:

  • highlight the existence of same-gender relationships
  • give appropriate language and terminology to describe people who experience same-gender attraction
  • explain that marriage is equally available to all adults in the UK and some other countries, but that that was not always the case
  • encourage thinking ahead to a time where you have a friend that comes out to you
  • create some pride in the school!

GENDER IDENTITY (the T bit of LGBT+)

During this workshop, we would look to:

  • deliver an interactive reading of our book Alien Nation
  • give appropriate language and terminology to describe people who experience their gender in a different way to the gender they were given at birth
  • look at some important people in trans activism history, including the kindness they have shown
  • encourage thinking ahead to a time where you have a friend that comes out to you
  • create some pride in the school!
